Please Oppose S.2426, the Cyber Safety for Kids Act:
As an Internet user with a concern for free speech issues, I am writing to you to voice my opposition to S.2426, the Cyber Safety for Kids Act. This bill would require all sites with sexually explicit content to move to a new ".xxx"-style domain, which the U.S. government would require be created for this purpose.
This is a misguided and impractical attempt to restrict protected speech on the Internet, which will impose a heavy cost on those who publish online. Many American Net users that are not dealing with pornography, such as sites discussing birth control options, will be obliged to move to an online ghetto or risk massive civil penalties. Meanwhile, hundreds of thousands of adult sites outside of American jurisdiction won't have to move, rendering any filtering based on the new domain name useless.
The bill will undoubtedly be challenged under the First Amendment. Given the alternative recourses available to those monitoring their children's Net use and the burden the new domain will place on lawful speech, it will almost certainly be found unconstitutional.
Please stand against this clumsy, impractical, and unconstitutional attempt to regulate Internet speech.
Oppose S.2426, the Cyber Safety for Kids Act.
Sincerely,
